Parental Control vs. Personal Choice in Marriage: Who Should Decide?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If the parents don’t allow their child to marry on his own will; should the child also deny their choice of spouse?

Bismillaah

A: Generally parents have more experience and understanding in the matters of nikaah compared to children and hence through them deciding there will be less chances of problems occurring later on. In the case of a girl, it is shameful and against the Sunnah for her to look for her own suitor and get married without the consent of her parents or guardians.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
