Accepting a gift from the neighbour with merry christmas greetings

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I have received a huge box of chocolates from my neighbour and it was conveyed with Merry Christmas greetings with it. If we exchange it, would it be permissible to eat the chocolates or not?

Bismillaah

A: It is best for one not to accept the gift. However if one accepts it, then it will be permissible for one to consume it. Before consuming it, one should tear off the merry Christmas greetings in order to show that one neither supports their celebrations nor has any regard for it.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
