Īṣāl al-Thawāb (sending reward) for non-Muslim

Question

Can a Muslim do Īṣāle Thawāb for a non-Muslim who has passed away?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

Answer

No. Īṣāl al-Thawāb (sending reward) is only for Muslims.

قال الله تعالى: ولا تصل على أحد منهم مات أبدا. وقال تعالى: استغفر لهم أو لا تستغفر لهم، الآية. وقال تعالى: ما كان للنبي والذين آمنوا أن يستغفروا للمشركين، الآية. وقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: إنه لو كان مسلما فأعتقتم عنه أو تصدقتم عنه أو حججتم عنه بلغه ذلك، رواه أبو داود (٢٨٨٣)۔
