Witchcraft on Hair

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by FatwaCentre.org

Question

Asslamualaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu,

A female wants to trim her hair at the hairdressers in order to keep it healthy. However has been told by someone to ensure she collects any hair that they have cut.

I wanted to clarify that the hair only becomes harmful in terms of doing knots/witchcraft etc when the hair has come out directly from the roots and not just by cutting off from the bottom.

Jazakallahu Khayra

Answer

We consulted with a couple of ‘aamils and were informed that sihr (witchcraft) is generally only successful if the entire hair strand is used such as hair fallen from combing. If it is only part of the hair then the witchcraft will usually fail or be partially effective. Bare in mind that this information is based on their experience.

In any case it is recommended to bury hair and nails though disposing is also permissible.
