Is Platinum Rings Permissible for Women?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa-TT.com
Question:

I bought my wife a platinum diamond ring a while ago, and would like clarification if platinum wedding ring is permissible for women to wear? I have heard from various non-qualified sources that it may not be permissible.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Platinum (Pt) is a naturally occurring element normally described as the gray-white transition metal.[1] Rings made from platinum are normally made out of pure platinum metal and not alloys.

According to Shari’ah, a woman may only wear a silver or gold ring, hence it is not permissible for a woman to wear a platinum ring.[2]

It would be permissible to sell the platinum ring and purchase another ring.

Alternatively, you may get the ring silver or gold plated. It would then be permissible for you to wear it).[3]
