Smelly borewell water

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa.org.au
My house is built on a very old grave yard, and we use hand pumps at home. Sometimes, a stringy stench comes out from the water of the hand pumps. Is the water coming out of the hand pump pure or impure? Jazakallah Khair.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Whether the water is pure or impure will depend on whether the smell in the water is due to the graves or due to some other reason. If it is due to the graves, the water will be impure; otherwise it will be pure. (Note: Water may naturally be smelly due to concentration of certain elements in the water).

Whether the smell in the water is due to the graves may depend on the depth of the bore well (i.e. its distance from the graves) as well as the age of the graves. You should consult local people who have experience in this regard in order to determine the source of the smell. [1]

And Allah knows best.
