Question:

Which type of vomit breaks one’s fast?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The Fuqaha’ have explained different types of vomit. Here is the breakdown:

  1. Un-induced (involuntary)
    • Mouthful
      • Spat out
      • Swallowed intentionally
      • Swallowed unintentionally
    • Not Mouthful
      • Spat out
      • Swallowed intentionally
      • Swallowed unintentionally
  2. Induced (voluntary).
    • Mouthful
      • Spat out
      • Swallowed intentionally
      • Swallowed unintentionally
    • Not Mouthful
      • Spat out
      • Swallowed intentionally
      • Swallowed unintentionally

The ones which are highlighted red breaks one’s fast, and others do not. [i]

الحاصل كما في شرح السيد أن جملة المسائل اثنتا عشرة لأنه أما أن يكون قاء أوا ستقاء وكل أما أن يكون ملء الفم أو دونه وكل من الأربعة أما أن يكون عاد بنفسه أو أعاده أو خرج ولا يفطر في الكل على الأصح إلا في الإعادة والاستقاء بشرط ملء الفم (حاشية الطحطاوي على مراقي الفلاح شرح نور الإيضاح (ص: 662))
