 LAILATUL QADR –

THE NIGHT OF POWER By Mufti Waseem Khan (Hafizahullah)

“We have indeed revealed this (message) on the Night of Power

And what will explain to you what is the Night of Power?

The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.

Therein comes down the Angels and the Spirit by Allah’s permission on every errand.”                (Quraan, Chapter 97)

Abu Hurairah (R.A.) reports that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said, “Whoever stands in prayer and worship on the Night of Power, with complete faith and with sincere hope of gaining reward, all his previous sins are forgiven.” (At-Targhiib from Bukhaarii and Muslim)

The Night of Power is one of the most blessed nights in the month of Ramadhan. According to different traditions, this night has been given as a special gift to the Muslim nation and has not been granted to any other nation before this. In a tradition, it is reported that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) once mentioned about a man from among the Israelites who devoted his life to the cause of Allah for a thousand months. The companions were amazed and impressed, but were saddened because they knew there was no way that they could reach this status of devotion. Upon this Allah granted this Ummah the Night of Power, which is equal to a thousand months.

The night (being so great) should be spent diligently in devotion, recitation of the Quraan and supplication. As stated in the above-mentioned Hadiith, Allah grants forgiveness of all the previous sins of  a  person who spends the night in prayer. In another tradition reported by Anas (R.A.) he says, “Once when Ramadhan commenced the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said, “A month has verily dawned over you wherein lies a night better than a thousand months. Whoever misses such a night has indeed been deprived of all that is good and none is deprived of it, except he who is really unfortunate.” (Ibn Maajah)

Based upon these traditions, it is known that the Night of Power (LaIlatul Qadr) occurs in the month of Ramadhan. However, the exact night is not given. Instead, the Prophet (S.A.) is reported to have said, “Seek it on the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadhan.” (Bukhaarii) In another tradition, he (the Prophet) (S.A.W) said, “Seek the night in the last ten days and if any of you is weak or can’t observe it he should not miss the remaining seven days.” (Muslim) It is therefore recommended that  a person should seek the night among the last ten odd nights i.e. 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th of Ramadhan.
