Fatwa – Wearing a neck tie

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulihsan.com

Q: I would appreciate if you could explain me in detail about neck-tie. Is it permissible? If not, why not?

A:

The neck tie is not an appropriate form of dressing from an Islamic point of view. In fact, it is said that it was originally used to symbolise the cross.

Although its wearing nowadays cannot be deemed to be totally prohibited or haraam, it is not the dressing of the pious whom we are encouraged to follow. Hence, one should avoid wearing the neck tie.
