Giving clothes to in laws at the time of wedding

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

In India there is tradition to gift cloths by bride parent to there close relative, Is it OK or we should not do this as most of these people are well to do peoples.

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer
The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said: “Exchange gifts, as that will lead to increasing your love to one another.” (Sahih Bukhari)
The aforementioned practice is permissible as long as one does not deem it to be necessary; otherwise, it will become a bidah and an innovation.
The scholars have written that if someone deems or believes something which in Islam is desirable and mustuhub to be necessary, then that can amount to a bidah. (Takmilul Hajah, Sharah Sunan Ibn Majah p.103)
