Is Making a Mark With a Pencil on a Verse or Page on the Qur’an for Identification Permissible

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question:

Is making a mark with a pencil on a verse or page on the Qur’an for identification permissible?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Allah (SWT) mentions in the Holy Qur’an, “If one observes the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, then such things emanate from the piety of the hearts.”.[1]

From the above verse of the Quran, we understand that anything that would dishonour the Quran would not be permissible. Making a mark with a pencil on a page of the Qur’an is permissible because it is not disrespectful to the sanctity of the Qur’an.

Only Allah knows best
