Saying bismillah in the bathroom

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question:

When in the washroom is it permissible to say Bismillah when going to shower and also when making Wudu in the bathroom since the toilet is in there too.

Answer

بسم الله الرحمن الرحي

You should read the dua before entering the toilet and before you expose your body, and after exiting the toilet. (Maraqi al falah, pg.21, Darul kutub al ilmiyah. Behesht izewar, pg. 109, Idara-e- talifate ashrafiyah)

In beheshtizewar it says if you sneeze in the toilet then say “Al hamdulillah” in your mind and do not read it with the tongue nor speak anything in the toilet.   Beheshti zewar, pg.109, Idara-e- talifatea shrafiyah)

Therefore, one must not read any dua whilst having shower if he has taken his clothes off or there is a toilet there as well. However, one can read the dua in his mind.

Only Allah knows best.
