Are we supposed to consummate the marriage on the night of the Nikah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Answered by: Mufti Eunus Ali

Question:

In Islam why are we supposed to consummate the marriage on the night of the Nikah?

Answer

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

It is not a necessity to consummate the marriage during the first night of marriage.

In addition to the above, if the wife is experiencing her menses at that time it will be haram for the couple to engage in sexual intercourse.[1]

It should be noted that it is Sunnah to consummate the marriage before the Walimah.[2]
