Is smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, etc. halaal in Islam? Is it ok to tell brothers to not smoke due to alcohol content? What is the ruling on opiates in Islam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Assalamualikum, I have noticed many of our Muslim brothers engage in habits such as smoking cigarrettes, and consuming other tobacco products (chewing tobacco, ghutka, etc.). I would like to know are these habits halaal in Islam? Because in reality you are poisoning your body just like you would by drinking alcohol. Also, many cigarettes contain alcohol so is it ok to tell brothers to not smoke for this reason? (2) Finally, what is the ruling on opiates in Islam? Jazakallah Khair

Answer

(Fatwa: 1114/863=H/1430)

There is no wrong to convince Muslim brothers wisely of the harms of the tobacco and other things.

As far as opiates is concerned, it is intoxicant; therefore it is unlawful to consume.
