Question:
Does zakaat have to be give from the same type of wealth is if you have Nisaab in money can you give zakaat of clothes you own to a poor person? if yes how is the value of an item evaluated ie if I give clothes how will I know how much of zakaat does that cover?
Answer:
• It is permissible to discharge one’s Zakaat from different types of wealth as long as the item is worthy of being used and is not from a very lowly quality. Example, a cloth that has been used so many times that the cloth becomes defective and worthless.
• You must see the market value of that cloth and deduct it from the Zakaat you were supposed to pay. Example, your Zakaat amount to payout is 1000 rands and the market value of that cloth is 200 rands, so subtract 200 rands from 1000 rands which will result to 800 rands of Zakaat still pending.
Now, if the cloth you want to give away as Zakaat is not a new one, then you should decrease the value of the cloth to the market value. Example, the market value of that cloth brand new is 200 rands and because it is used, it will only fetch a 100 rands, so decrease the value to be subtracted from your total Zakaat to a 100 rands.

عن عبد الله بن معاوية الغَاضِرِيِّ – من غاضِرَةِ قيْسِ – قال: قال النبيُّ – صلَّى الله عليه وسلم -: “ثلاثٌ مَنْ فَعَلَهنَّ فقد طَعِمَ طَعْمَ الإيمان: مَنْ عَبَدَ الله وحدَه وأنَّه لا إله إلا الله، وأعطى زكاةَ مالِه طيبةَ بها نفسُه، رافدةً عليه كل عام، ولا يُعطي الهَرِمة، ولا الدَّرِنَة، ولا المريضَة، ولا الشَّرَطَ اللَّئيمةَ، ولكن من وَسَطِ أموالِكُم، فإنَّ الله لم يسألْكُم خَيرَه، ولم يأمُرْكُم بشَرِّه”(سنن أبي داود/رقم1582)
بہت گھٹيا چيز زکوۃ ميں دينا درست نہيں ہے(فتاوی قاسميہ/ج10/ص520)
نيا کپڑا جو استعمال نہ کيا گياہو زکاۃ ميں دے سکتے ہيں، مگر بازار ميں جس قيمت ميں فروخت کيا جائيگا وہی قيمت لگا نا ضروری ہے(فتاوی قاسميہ/ج10/ص520)
مثلا جوڑے ايک ہزار کا ہے، اور استعمال کی وجہ سے اس کی قيمت پانچ سو روپيہ رہ گئ ہے، تو زکاۃ کے طوپر دينے سے پانچ سو روپئے کا شمار ہو گا(فتاوی قاسميہ/ج10/ص522)
