Question:
Is Mahr necessary in a Nikah?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Answer:
In the Quran, Almighty Allah Ta’āla says:
“So that with your wealth you seek (to marry) binding yourself in marriage and not only for lust.” (Nisā: 24)
Thus, the jurists have stated that Mahr is binding in a Nikah. It is the right of the woman.
