Trading in Dogs

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: Is it permitted in Islam to keep a dog in the house for security purposes? Can I deal in trading of dogs?

A. It is permissible to keep a dog for security purposes and protection. Do not allow the dog inside the house unless there is a dire need, e.g. the robber is in the house, etc. (Raddul Muhtaar V20 P296)

It is permissible to sell a dog trained to do specific jobs such as guarding, hunting, etc or which can be trained for such jobs when there is a need. (Raddul Muhtaar 20:294; Al Fataawa Al Hindiyyah 3:114) It will not be permissible to sell other dogs that are kept merely for pets. And Allah knows best.
