Demanding Dower from Bride’s Family

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: Is it allowed to accept dahez (dower) from the parents of the bride (girl)?

A. It is not permissible to ask/demand anything from the parents/family of the bride as Dahez. Dahez (jahez) must not be demanded from the girl’s party. If they give something of their own accord with happiness, it will be permissible to accept it. They must not feel forced or compelled to give something because of the usual custom. Dahez is a custom that has been derived from the non-Muslims. The custom of Dahez must necessarily be wiped out.

(Dahez or Jahez means a dower which the family of the girl gives to the family of the boy).
