Disgracing Someone

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I want to ask if someone brings about disgrace or badnami to anyone(say person A) because of person A’s bad act, then what’s the gunah for the one who brings disgrace to him? EVEN if person A has been changed and regrets.

If person A forgives all those who brought disgrace upon him, then what’s the sawab for this for him?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

As Muslims we should strive for the welfare of our brother/sister, even if that person may be involved in some wrong act. The Prophet (Sallalahu Alahi Wa Sallam) in many Ahadith has encouraged us to hide the faults of another Muslim and prohibited us from disclosing their faults.

Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim. So he should not oppress him nor should he hand him over to (his satan or to his self which is inclined to evil). Whoever fulfills the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever removes the troubles of his brother, Allah will remove one of his troubles on the Day of Resurrection; and whoever covers up the fault of a Muslim, Allah will cover up his fault on the Day of Resurrection”.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

It was narrated from Ibn `Abbas that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever conceals the (hidden) fault of his Muslim brother, Allah (SWT) will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever exposes the fault of his Muslim brother, Allah will expose his faults, until (so that) He shames him, due to it, in his (own) house.” (Sunan Ibn Majah Hadith 2546)

Thus it is not permissible to bring disgrace to another Muslim, and if someone does so, sincere Tawba should be made and forgiveness must be sought from the person.

Forgiving and having mercy on others is indeed a virtuous act and has been showed to us by The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam);

When he entered the city of Makkah after the victory, The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) had in front of him some of his staunchest enemies. Those who fought and opposed him for many years, persecuted his followers and killed many of them. Now he had full power to do whatever he wanted to punish them for their crimes. It is reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) asked them: “What do you think I shall do to you now” They expected nothing but retaliation and pleaded for mercy. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said, “Today I shall say to you what Yusuf )peace be upon him( said, (as mentioned in the Qur’an, Yusuf 12:92) )” “No blame on you today. Go, you are all free.” Soon they all came and accepted Islam at his hands. He forgave even Hind who had caused the murder of his uncle Hamza (Radhiallahu Anhu). After killing him she had his body mutilated and chewed his liver. When she accepted Islam, the Prophet even forgave her.[1]
