Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, we wish to point out that as Muslims, we are sensitive to our belief of Tawheed (monotheism). It is of utmost importance that such understanding be instilled in the hearts of each and every Muslim. Once a person will understand this important principle, it will become easy for one to comprehend the reasons as to why Islam is averse to many of the customs, traditions and celebrations of the non-Muslims. As such, we are required to completely disassociate ourselves from all kinds of un-Islamic practices, celebration and customs. Consider the following verse:

“Definitely, the only religion with Allah (acceptable to Allah) is Islam (to hand over oneself totally to Allah).” [3:19]

Shar’iah advocates that as Muslims, we are required to preserve our Imaan and self-values, we are prohibited from even imitating the acts of non-Muslims. Consider the following narration:

“Whoever imitates a nation will be amongst them.”[1]

Furthermore, consider the following narration of ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr Radiyallahu ‘Anhu:

“Whoever resides in the lands of the non-Arabs and then celebrates their religious occasions (Nairūz and Mahrajān) and emulates their practices and thereafter dies in such a condition, he shall be raised with them on the day of Qiyāmah.”[2]

Halloween[3] and bonfire (specifically in Halloween)[4] in their very origins and traditions are against Tawheed (monotheism) and principles of Islam. It is impermissible for Muslims to practice such celebrations.

“Halloween or Hallowe’en also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It initiates the triduum of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers. Within Allhallowtide, the traditional focus of All Hallows’ Eve revolves around the theme of using “humor and ridicule to confront the power of death.”…..

In having a bonfire, specifically in Halloween, its origin also consists of elements which are against the belief of Islam. According to some, it is stated regarding bonfires, “Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter

Others state that “On this night, Celtic priests called Druids dressed in animal masks and skins and performed sacrifices to placate the gods and “ward off” spirits. Bonfires represented the sun, the power to fight dark forces. The Druids lit huge bonfires and burned animals, crops, and sometimes even humans. In fact, the word “bonfire” comes from “bonefire”…….”
