Does the hadith of ‘A’ishah that the girls sang the songs of Bu‘ath on the Day of Eid prove there is leniency in listening to music? Is trimming eyebrows a societal issue?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

1) A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: “Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him, came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Bu..ath (a story about the pre-Islamic war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the Khazraj and the Awus). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laid down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me harshly saying, ‘Musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?’ Thereupon, Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face towards him and said, ‘Leave them.’ When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I signaled to those girls to go out and they left.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

Does this denote that there is some leniency in listening to music?

2) In regards to trimming the eyebrows, could we say that it was a societal issue, where a prostitute in the time of Nabi (SAW) used to pluck her eyes?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

  1. Listening to musical instruments is, in general, harām by consensus of the fuqahā’[1] based on a number of authentic and clear hadīths[2]. In the specific narration you cited, there is no mention of musical instruments being played in the presence of the Prophet (sallAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam). Rather, the two young girls were merely using their voices and singing some poetry of Jāhiliyyah. The statement of Abū Bakr (radiyAllāhu ‘anh) translated as, “Musical instruments of Satan”, in the original Arabic is “mizmārat al-shaytān”, which also translates to “the sound or voice of Satan.” Hence, the statement is a reference to singing.[3]
  1. The explanation for why plucking or shaping the eyebrows is not permissible is found in the hadīth itself: it is altering the creation of Allāh[4]. Making changes to the natural way in which Allāh has created us is not permitted unless it is in accordance with the guidelines of Sharī‘ah with regards to cleanliness and keeping a good appearance.[5]
