What is the ruling if a person accidentally prays towards a direction other than the Qiblah? How to determine the Qiblah direction in the wilderness?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

What is the ruling, if after the prayer it becomes clear that it was prayed towards other than the direction of the Qiblah; does it make any difference if this (happened) in a Muslim land or a kaafir land or in the wilderness?

How to determine qiblah direction in the wilderness, what is one cannot guess the sunrisesunset , how would one know?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1) In principle, if a person tried his best to determine the Qiblah direction regardless of where he is, but was still unable to do so, his Salah will be valid even if he discovered that he was praying in the wrong direction after performing the Salah.[1] However, if no effort was made to determine the Qiblah before performing Salah, the Salah will be invalid.[2]

2) In determining the Qiblah direction whilst one is in the wilderness, one must first:

  • Use any means at his disposal in order to determine the Qiblah, e.g., the use of a compass or asking a person that may be able to inform him about the Qiblah direction.
  • If no means are available to determine the direction of the Qiblah, then one should try his best in determining the direction of the Qiblah, e.g., using the direction of the sun, moon or stars.
  • If this is also not possible, one may apply his discretion about the direction of the Qiblah and perform his Salah.[3]
