Answer

Assalāmu `alaikum Warahmatullāhi Wabrakatuh,

1.      It is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a Christian or Hindu man.[1]

2.      It is not permissible for a Muslim man to marry a Hindu woman. In principle a Muslim man may marry a Christian or Jewish woman. However many present day Christians and Jews only classify themselves to be Christians or Jews whereas their beliefs are not in conformity to their respective religions. As such it will not be permissible to marry such women.

Despite the permissibility of marrying people of the book, since marriage is a major step one must consider the following points.

The purpose of marriage is to build a relationship which is based on the obedience of Allah. The Hadith of Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلمmentions,

 

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ تُنْكَحُ الْمَرْأَةُ لِأَرْبَعٍ لِمَالِهَا وَلِحَسَبِهَا وَجَمَالِهَا وَلِدِينِهَا فَاظْفَرْ بِذَاتِ الدِّينِ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكَ صحيح البخاري- طوق النجاة – (7 / 7)

“A woman is married for four things, i.e., her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion. You should marry the religious woman (otherwise) you will be a loser. ” 

We understand from this Hadith that an individual by means of who one could gain the proximity of Allah is the ideal spouse. Many a times a person has to make decisions in life where he has to prioritize between this world and his Deen. With a religious minded spouse, the ultimate goal of being successful in this test of life will be made much more easy. This may not materialize if the spouse is of a different religious background, for example Christian or Jewish.

Shariah lays great emphasis on the factor of compatibility. You being a Muslim with Islamic values are very different then another individual who subscribes to a whole set of differing beliefs and values.

Looking at the era after the demise of Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلمa vast majority of the Sahaaba and Taabi’een disliked the idea of marrying a Christian or Jew because of the destructive implications which would arise therefrom. To such an extent that during the Khilaafate of Umar, when a few Sahaabah had married women of the book and this news had reached Umar, he issued an order that those sahaabah should divorce their wives. When this was the stance of those individuals who had the highest levels of Imaan, then how much more cautious should the people of this time and era be?
