In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

According to the Hanafi Madhab the Muqtadi will not recite Surah Fatiha behind the Imam. As followers of the Hanafi Madhab we believe that Imam Abu Hanifa (RahmatuAllah Alayh) derived the ruling based on Quran and Ahadith. Consider the following two references:

So, when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy. (Quran 7: 204)

It is also proved through the Hadith:

The Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam) says: “For indeed the Imam is to be followed so do not oppose him, if he does Takbir so do as he does and if he recites (Qur’an) remain silent…” (Bayhaqi)

Therefore, when the Imam is reciting the Quran silently or loudly, you will not recite Surah Fatiha or anything else behind him.

(Fatawa Rahimiyah, 5/36-46, Isha’at)

And Allah knows best
