What does it mean by doing ‘Bait’? Which Muslim sects do this and WHY? Was this ever recommended by the Prophet s.a.w.s.? IF NOT, doesn’t it automatically become a Biddah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org
Answer

1. Bay?at means when you put your hand in the hand of a pious person and take an oath of allegiance. The person who you choose to take bay?at with must be a person who has taqwa, abides by all the laws of the Shari?ah, has humility and he is a person who has permission to make mureeds. A mureed is a person who takes bay?at. The person who you take bay?at with is called a Shaykh.

2. Taking of bay?at is not restricted to any sect. As such, people who have the zeal and enthusiasm to take bay?at, will do so.

3. Bay?at has been established from the Qur’aan. Refer attached.
