I dont want to marry my cousin whom i have been engaged to since 1998.. the reason i was engaged to him was t o bring him to states and now he is here but i have no deisre to marry him..parents are not agreeing they say we know that islam doesnt require force but still we will marry u to him b/c people will make fun of us!1 what should i do mufthi saheb? i need some help..im not willing to do isthkhara fore its only to be done if u have doubts about anything, i am intersted in a very pious person who understands islam and is a very good person i havnt told my parents about him or else they will kill me!! what can i do in this matter? pls help me and remeber us in ur du’ua’s..
According to the Shari’ah, an adult male and female has an independent right
to choose his/her marriage partner. An adult is not bound to follow the
family custom. He/she may do so if he/she wish to.
It is not proper for the elders of the family to compel one to go against
his/her wishes within the Shari’ah. We also advise that Nikah is a major
step in one’s life and it is important to make Istikhaara as well as seek
the guidance and experience of one’s seniors.
