Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Farzāna (فرزانه) means wise and intelligent.[i]

In principle, it is permissible to name your child with a non-arabic name that has a good meaning.

The name Farzana is of Persian origin and a suitable name.[ii]

Consider the following hadith:

إِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِأَسْمَائِكُمْ، وَأَسْمَاءِ آبَائِكُمْ، فَأَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ (سنن ابي داود،4950)

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said, “On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your father’s names, so give yourselves good names.” (Sunan Abu Dawood: 4950)[iii]

We are not aware of the bad meaning your teacher refers to. You may contact us at admin@daruliftaa.net if you need further clarification.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.
