Does watching dramas and movies and cartoon shows equate to shirk?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

As-salam-elay-kum Mufti Sahib

I wanted to know about TV dramas.  Does watching dramas and movies and cartoon shows equal to shirk?  Because their story has a plot and Allah taala already made taqdeer (destiny).  When in dramas they show Mothers praying to Allah to relive them from some problem but in reality its the producer who plans what to happen in the drama.  For example a child is involved in a car accident in a drama and mother prays to God to relive her from the distress but in reality its the producer who decides to keep the child alive or to let him die in the drama  Isn’t that shirk?  Please clarify my confusion.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Firstly, we wish to point out that it is impermissible to watch television as it is a disastrous device that has caused immeasurable damage to the youth and the society at large. Movies and dramas are detrimental to our minds and way of thinking. It is filled with ideas that are immoral and lewd, destroying the morality and modesty of our society.

We understand your concern regarding matters of our faith. Shirk means ascribing a partner to  Allah in lordship or worship. As for the plot and scenes portrayed in tv dramas, due to their fictional nature, both the creators and viewers of the show know and understand that the show is not meant to really oppose the decree of Allah in anything. Accordingly, there is no partner ascribed to Allah and it is not Shirk.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
