Death comes at its appointed time

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rohmotullahi Wa Barakatuhu

Sayyiduna Hamzah ibn Abdul Muttalib RadiaAllahu Ta’ala Anhu was martyred on the Day of the Battle of Uhud.. My question is if he did not attend the war, could he delay his death since he was not affected by any mortal disease? Or is it so that he were to die right on that day regardless of any excuse?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Brother in Islam,

When Allah decrees something, it will be as Allah decrees. Nothing can stop the decree of Allah. We apply this same principle of Taqdeer to all issues of life beyond our control. We simply submit to Taqdeer and do not hypothecate Taqdeer with reverse questions like what if…

Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alahi Wassalam) advises us:

المؤمن القوي خير وأحب إلى الله من المؤمن الضعيف وفي كل خير‏.‏ احرص على ما ينفعك، واستعن بالله ولا تعجز‏.‏ وإن أصابك شيء فلا تقل‏:‏ لو أني فعلت كان كذا وكذا، ولكن قل‏:‏ قدر الله، وما شاء فعل؛ فإن لو تفتح عمل الشيطان(مسلم)

Translation:A strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than a weak one, and both are good. Adhere to that which is beneficial for you. Keep asking Allah for help and do not refrain from it. If you are afflicted in any way, do not say: ‘If I had taken this or that step, it would have resulted into such and such,’ but say only: ‘Allah so determined and did as He willed.’ The word ‘if’ opens the gates of satanic thoughts’[i]

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
