What are the kid’s rights to the father’s second wife?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My dad got married to a second wife in 2013. My siblings and I, including my mum (his first wife) we’re not aware of his marriage until early 2014.

My siblings and I have not spoken or had contact with his second wife. My dad is really pushing for my siblings and I to have contact with his second wife. My siblings and I feel we would prefer not to talk or have anything to do with his second wife as apart from that being our choice it will further upset or mum.

From an Islamic perspective please advise where we stand with regards to our rights in this manner.

Jazakallah Khayran for your assistance on the above.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Brother in Islām,

We understand the emotions involved in the issue in reference. In principle it is not necessary to keep contact with your father’s second wife. Furthermore, it is Harām to cause pain to one’s own mother due to ones conduct. Accordingly, we advise you to discuss your feelings and concerns with your father. Apply wisdom and diplomacy in the matter.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
