What is a Hadith Mutawaatir?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The various categories of Ahadith with their specific definitions is an intricate science that is taught to students in the advanced stages of the Aalim course. Hereunder is a simplified definition of Hadith Mutawaatir.

Hadith Mutawaatir is such a narration which is narrated by such a large number of people in each era that it would be impossible for all the narrators to make up the hadith and orchestrate a lie.^[i]

An example of a Hadith Mutawaatir is the following Hadith of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam:

عن أبي هريرة، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «من كذب علي متعمدا، فليتبوأ مقعده من النار»

Translation: Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam said: whomsoever lies upon me, let him take an abode in Hellfire^[ii]

فإِذا جَمَعَ هذهِ الشُّروطَ الأربعةَ، وهي:

عَدَدٌ كثيرٌ أَحَالَتِ العادةُ تواطُؤهُم على الكَذِبِ.

 رَوَوْا ذلك عن مِثْلِهِم من الابتداء إلى الانتهاءِ.

وكان مُسْتَنَدُ انْتِهائِهِمُ الحِسَّ.

وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: رَوَاهُ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ مِائَةِ نَفْسٍ.
