Can a wedding feast fulfill the Kaffarah of feeding sixty people?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

i have asked this question before but what is hanafi ruling: I have to offer expiation by feeding sixty poor persons, and my wedding is approaching. Can the wedding feast take the place of the expiation, knowing that I will be paying for all the expenses?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You refer to the expiation ( kaffarah) of feeding 60 poor persons. You did not state what the expiation is for. In the Quran, Allah refers to feeding 60 persons as an expiation for breaking the fast of Ramadan without a valid reason.

If  the expiation is for that, then we advise you that the first level of expiation in that situation  is to fast for two months consecutively and also keep one qadha fast.

Feeding 60 persons is the second level of expiation and will be valid  only if one cannot fast for two months.

Never the less, if you do qualify to fulfill the expiation of the second level, then you may invite 60 poor persons to the wedding feast with the intention of fulfilling your expiation.  The 60 poor persons must be fed for two meals.  The wedding feast will be considered one meal. You will have to feed the same 60 persons for another meal or you may give them the monetary value for another meal .

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
