Holding a Feast to Benefit the Dead

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) Is it permissible to arrange a feast every year on a particular date (for convenience, so people know) for the poor to get the sawab for the dead family members. Please elaborate. [Shibly Sadek Chowdhury, Connecticut, USA]

A.) Since this custom has developed into an evil bidah, one should not perpetuate such a custom. In a quiet manner spend some charity on the poor and make Dua unto Allah Ta’ala that He grants the reward thereof to the deceased. This method will be more beneficial to the deceased.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
