Hadith Query with regards to how often one should complete the Qur’aan Shareef

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: With regards to the recitation of Quran, I have found two different hadith:

1. Quran should be read not less then seven days:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As: Wahb ibn Munabbih said: Abdullah ibn Amr asked the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him); In how many days should one complete the recitation of the Qur’an? He said: In forty days. He then said: In one month. He again said: In twenty days. He then said: In fifteen days. He then said: In ten days. Finally he said: In seven days. [Sunnah Abu Dawood]

2. Quran should be read not less then three days:

Abd Allah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As (Allah be well pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “Whoever reads the Qur’an in less than three days does not understand (what he recited)” Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasa’i, Bhukari

I have the following question’s:

  1. How do we reconcile and understand the about two narrations that mentions 7 days and other as 3 days?
  2. Is there any authentic daleel to prove that Quran can be recited in less than 3 days ? Some people say to read Quran in less then 3 days is against the practice of sunnah.
  3. I have heard that many salaf have completed Quran many times in less than 3 day? How can we say authenticate this practice and such reports.

Bismillaah

A: This prohibition in the hadeeth refers to one who does not recite correctly, ignoring the rules of tajweed and reciting without pondering. If one does recite with reflection and maintains the rules of tajweed etc. then he doesn’t come under the purview of this prohibition. It is reported in Bukhaari Shareef that Hadhrat Dawood (alaihis salaam) used to instruct his mount to be saddled and within that time he would recite the entire Zaboor. Hadhrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahuanhu) used to recite the entire Qur’aan in a single rakaat of witr.
