Birthday Wishes

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: I know that it is wrong to celebrate birthdays. However is it wrong to wish someone (a non-Muslim) happy birthday for the sake of keeping friendly ties? No presents, only wishing them.

A: Instead of saying happy birthday, rather give him a beneficial Du’aa, e.g. May your life be filled with guidance or similar Du’aas with the intention of him receiving guidance towards Islam. Even the words ‘all the best’ with this intention will suffice.

Allah Ta’aala knows best.
