Answered by Shaykh Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf Mangera
Is there anything wrong with sleeping in a dark room (i.e. without a nightlight)? Or is it a Sunna if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) blew out the fire (lamp) before he slept?
Assalamu alaykum
In the name of Allah, the Inspirer of truth,
There is absolutely nothing wrong with sleeping in a dark room. As far as the narration is concerned it may be the following narration which is regarding an oil burning lamp or other types of live fire.
Abu Musa al-Ash’ari reports that a house burnt down in Madina upon its dwellers at night. When the Messenger (upon him be peace) was informed about this he said, “This fire is your enemywhen you sleep, extinguish it” (Bukhari, Muslim).
Hence, the Messenger (upon him be peace) instructed that fire should be extinguished to minimize accident with it. However, there would be nothing wrong with keeping an electric night light on at night.
An Allah knows best.
Wassalam
