Women standing shoulder to shoulder in congregation

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

As-Salaamu `alaikum wa RaHmatullaah.
I understand that it is permissible for sisters to pray in a congregation led by brothers, however, i am confused on the issue of actually how the sisters should pray. This is because the sunnah way for a sister to sit in prayer is with her right thigh on top of her left, her feet to the right side, facing the direction of the Qiblah. (Insha’Allaah i hope this is correct!)
Thus i think it is near impossible for the sisters to stand shoulder to shoulder in prayer as the brothers do, so is it correct to make the conclusion that even when sisters are praying in congregation they must still pray individually and not touching???
If this is so i intend to give daw’ah to the sisters at the masjid to prevent the wrong type of congregation.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

It would appear from the general nature of the hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the words of the fuqaha’ that it would remain recommended to stand should-to-shoulder for women as well as men–but in a comfortable manner than doesn’t inconvenience those next to one.

And Allah alone gives success.
