Repaying Debts… and what if she stole something embarrassing

A Muslim did a great deal of stealing in her ignorant days. For example she shoplifted and stole from people she didn’t know and has no change of ever meeting again. How does she pay back money to shops she may have shoplifted from ten years ago, when most of the shops are closed down now? Also she stole something like a condom from a woman’s purse – she stills sees that woman, but obviously she can’t give her back a condom which is of no use to the woman ten years later… What about the people the sister stole from, that she didn’t know and never will get to see again. The Muslim also stole some books from the public library ten years ago, how can she repay that? Is there any way at all that one may settle that debt in this world?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful & Compassionate

As for the people and stores she knows, she must repay them directly with the monetary equivalent of what she stole. She doesn’t have to explain why she is repaying, and can do so anonymously, when she fears a reprise or refusal.

And Allah alone gives success.
