mufti saab ,i would like to know if a person is working and earning 4000.oo salary,he owns a tv and hifi also a car,and he is paying 3000.00 rent . he is left with 1000.00 for other expenses which he cannot make ends meet.

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh
If the value of the hifi and the television and any other possession of his which does not fall under the ambit of the necessities of life equal more the amount of Nisāb, it will not be permissible for such a person to accept Zakāh. The car is considered as a necessity; therefore, it will be excluded from the Nisāb; however, the hifi and the television do not constitute necessities, therefore they will be included in the calculation of Nisāb.

وأماالغنىالذييحرمبهأخذالصدقةوقبولهافهوالذيتجببهصدقةالفطروالأضحيةوهوأنيملكمنالأموالالتيلاتجبفيهاالزكاةمايفضلعنحاجتهوتبلغقيمةالفاضلمائتيدرهممنالثيابوالفرشوالدوروالحوانيتوالدوابوالخدمزيادةعلىمايحتاجإليهكلذلكللابتذالوالاستعماللاللتجارةوالإسامة،فإذافضلمنذلكمايبلغقيمتهمائتيدرهموجبعليهصدقةالفطروالأضحيةوحرمعليهأخذالصدقةثمقدرالحاجةماذكرهالكرخيفيمختصرهفقاللابأسبأنيعطىمنالزكاةمنلهمسكنومايتأثثبهفيمنزلهوخادموفرسوسلاحوثيابالبدنوكتبالعلمإنكانمنأهلهفإنكانلهفضلعنذلكمايبلغقيمتهمائتيدرهمحرمعليهأخذالصدقةلمارويعنالحسنالبصريأنهقالكانوايعطونالزكاةلمنيملكعشرةآلافدرهممنالفرسوالسلاحوالخدموالدار – (بدائعالصنائعج 2ص 158 احياءالتراث)
