Question:
I have a question regarding (Lean) which is basically a drink that people nowadays make. Which includes sprite, jolly ranchers candy and cough syrup such as promethazine or codeine. Answer:
Allah says in the Qur’an:
They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say, “There is great evil in both, as well as some benefit for people, but the evil outweighs the benefit.” They ask you what they should donate. Say, “Whatever you can spare.” This is how Allah makes His revelations clear to you, so perhaps you may reflect (Qur’an, 2:219)
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet said, “All drinks that produce intoxication are Haram (forbidden to drink). (Sahih Al Bukhari, 242)
Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet said: If a large amount of anything causes intoxication, a small amount of it is prohibited. (Abu Dawood, 3681)
Lean has similar physiological effects as alcohol when taken in higher doses. It is an intoxicant and would be unlawful to consume. You should speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you need to use specific medicines and discuss Halal alternatives.
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلْخَمْرِ وَٱلْمَيْسِرِقُلْ فِيهِمَآ إِثْمٌۭ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَـٰفِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإِثْمُهُمَآ أَكْبَرُ مِن نَّفْعِهِمَا وَ يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنفِقُونَ قُلِ ٱلْعَفْوَ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَفَكَّرُونَ
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رضي اللّه عنها عَنِ النَّبِيِّ قَالَ كُلُّ شَرَابٍ أَسْكَرَ فَهُوَ حَرَامٌ
عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ
