Can we work in a leather shop?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Is it permissible to work in a leather goods shop? As this is a Non-Muslim country, therefore goods made of pig leather are bound to be found there. So does this make this job Halal or Haram? I am thinking of applying for a job in such a shop but I still haven’t done yet. Please advise me whether I should apply there or not.

Is permissible to work in a leather shop, no matter if it is owned by Muslims or not Muslims. But it is not permissible to work on pig leather. If this shop is using or manufacturing pig leather and you also will be required to work on pig leather, then you should not work there. All other types of leather from other animals are OK; and are permissible to be used after they have been tanned; no matter if they have been properly slaughtered (Zabiha) or not. The only exception to this rule is pig, which does not become permissible in any shape, form, or situation. Thus, it is not permissible to work on it.
