Using leather products

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I have a watch of Al-Fajr. It has genuine leather watch straps. My question is whether it is permissible to wear such watches because we are not aware of whether the animal used is halal and has been slaughtered in the halal way.

Bismillaah

A: The shar’ee ruling in regard to leather is that if the leather was made from pig skin, it will not be permissible to use it. However, if it was made from an animal that was not slaughtered according to the sharee method of slaughter but it was treated thereafter as is commonly seen today, then through treating it, it will become paak and it will be permissible to use it. You may enquire from the company regarding whether the leather is from pig skin or from any other animal.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
