Praying Asr With Zuhr Prayer

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) Most of the time I have to leave house by 3 pm. So I pray Zuhr prayer on time between 1-2pm. Right after that I pray Asr prayer even though Asr start at 5 pm in Los Angeles. It is hard for me to pray at work. So is it ok or better to pray Asr with Zuhr prayer rather than come home late from work and pray Asr missed prayer?

A.) If you are not a traveler according to Shariah rules (undertaking a journey of 88 km or more), then you cannot perform Asr Salat ahead of its time, in order to avoid the Salat becoming Qadha.

Every possible effort must be made to perform Asr Salat on time even at work. To make Salat Qadha is a major sin. If you did not perform Asr Salat on time, you will be sinful and will have to make Qadha. You should also make Istighfaar (repent) for not performing Salat on time.

The ruling will be the same if you are a traveler according to Shariah rules and follow the Hanafi Madhab. A leeway to perform Asr with Dhuhr is granted for a travelers according to the other Madhabs.
