Was the siwaak of the Prophet used by his wives

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa.org.au
Did Ayesha (RadiAllahu Anha) used to chew the siwaak of Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) before handing it to him? If so, could you please direct me to the source?

Did the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) share his siwaak with his wives?

Jazakumullah Khayr.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Aisha (Radiyallahu Anha) narrates: When the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) did siwaak, he would give me the siwaak to wash. I would firstly do siwaak with it myself; then I would wash it and give it to him. (Abu Dawud)

The hadith above could mean that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) used to firstly use the siwaak and then give it to Aisha (Radiyallaahu Anha) to wash to be kept till it is used again. It could also mean that he used to give it to her before using it himself so that she could wash and chew it to make it soft for him to use. (Fat-hul Baari: 2/471; Mirqaatul Mafaatih: 2/96)

And Allah knows best.
