It is a 3-year-11-month SGD structured deposit which offers:

• 3.88% fixed payout after 6 months
• 3 potential annual equity payouts of up to 4.80%, linked to the movements of the equity indices in Singapore, Hong Kong and Korea
• 100% principal protection at maturity

1. Is it Halal to invest such

2. Is it halal to use 2.88% fixed payout? My friend’s sister is divorced and she has 3 kids and not working.  She is living in India. Only his brother do support her (my friend). Is it possible to give this money to her?

3. Can “3 potential annual equity payouts of up to 4.80%,” also be given to his sister?

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

It is not permissible to receive a profit on a mere deposit without entering into a valid partnership in Shriah. It is not permissible to invest in the Invest Asia Account, and the different pay outs on the deposited money is not permissible.

Any access on the deposited amount is interest and should be given away in charity to the poor and needy. If your sister in is poor and needy, the excess amount may be given to her.
