Is It Permissible To Go Outside With Family Members Who Don’t Wear Hijab?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question

Is it haram to go outside with family members who don’t wear hijab? My sister and mother don’t wear it properly, and we meet other family members who don’t wear it. I’ve been told it’s permissible by some people with access to knowledge but everything I’ve read online says it’s haram.

Answer

Assalamu alaykum,

Thank you for your follow-up question. You are not directly responsible for your family members who do not wear hijab. Your job is to inform them and encourage them.

Accountability

It is not considered assisting in sin to go out with someone who does not cover. Your sole responsibility is to make sure that they know about the obligation of wearing hijab and to encourage it, but not to nag.

The best advice that I can give you when you are visiting female relatives who do not cover is here:

Good character

A more productive approach to the situation is to show good character, kindness, and service, such that they associate Islam with goodness and come to love it. This will go a long way and touch those that you don’t even know are being touched. When one spends enough time with you, they will come to love what you love.

May Allah give you the best of this world and the next.
