Should We Say Bismillah When We Do Things That Allah Dislikes?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Should we say Bismillah when we do things that Allah dislikes?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

Allah does not like it (makruh) when we say Bismillah when doing things that He dislikes.

For example, it would be offensive to say Bismillah and then stand to drink, this is because drinking standing up is offensive in itself.

This would be different to saying Bismillah before making ritual ablutions with really cold water because making ritual ablutions with really cold water is not offensive in itself, but only offensive for fear of not doing the rituals properly. (Hashiyat al-Sharwani)

I pray this helps.
