How Are the Levels of Paradise Greater or Lesser?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Are the levels of Paradise greater or lesser in a numerical sense or in a qualitative sense?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

The disparate levels of Paradise are greater and lesser than each other in both a numerical and qualitative sense. Therefore some levels that are lower than others have certain qualitative and categorical differences that are better than those above them. But overall, those that are better are ultimately better than them.

For example, there are numerical differences (how many rivers or how much gold) and qualitative differences (how much happiness, pleasure, how close to Allah).

This is because Paradise is a reward for human actions that are both numerically and qualitatively disparate. Ahmad fasts more fasts than Khalid, so he gets more in the next life, but some of Khalid’s fasts are more sincere than Ahmad’s so he also gets more than Ahmad.
