Excessive laughing will cause a person to be disregarded

Question

What is the reference for this Hadith?

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “He who laughs a lot his rights will be taken lightly.”

Answer

This narration is recorded in Al Mu’jamul Awsat of Imam Tabarani on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) as part of a longer narration. The part in question is as follows:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Whomsoever laughs excessively his rights will be brushed aside/disdained…”

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 6553. See another part of the Hadith here)

However, this Hadith has been transmitted with a very weak chain.

(Refer: Al Mughni Fid Du’afa, vol. 1 pg. 583. Also see: Kitabud Du’afa of Imam ‘Uqayli, vol. 4 pg. 388 -1338-, Al ‘Ilalul Mutanahiyah, Hadith: 1176 and Lisanul Mizan, vol. 6 pg. 58 -5566-)

The following narration may be quoted instead:

Sayyiduna ‘Umar ibnul Khattab (radiyallahu ‘anhu) advised Ahnaf ibn Qays and said: “O Ahnaf! Whomsoever laughs excessively, his respect will become insignificant…”

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat: 2280. Refer: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 302)

Note: This narration is recorded as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and not as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam).

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
