We apologize for the delay in responding to your question. Since we were researching the matter. We do not consider the meat from the Capybara to be halal to eat.

This is because, we consider it to be ‘khabeeth’ (repugnant) and something that Muslims of a sound disposition would abhor. And it is not permissible to eat something that is ‘khabeeth’, as Allah تعالى  has prohibited khabaa’ith (Surah A’raaf verse 157).

Mufti Ebrahim Desai Saheb, a renowned Mufti of our times, has also considered it to be impermissible.

It should be noted that the capybara is indigenous to South America, and as far as we are aware, the Ulama from Suriname and Guyana have also not allowed eating this animal.

Alhamdulillah, there is a wide range of other animals that Allah تعالى  has made permissible for us to eat and enjoy. The Capybara however, is not permissible.
